History
The Champions League started in 1955 when a French sports journalist and editor of L'Equipe Gabriel Hanot that there should be tournament for the winners of the European Leagues.

The first Champions League started in 1955-56. The rules of the the stages were that two of the 32 teams would play each other in two-leg knockout, the teams would play the maxemum of two matches, one match at home and one match away and after the matches were played the team with the highest score of the two games would qualify for the next round. Right up until 1992 only European teams that won their league and the current European champions could enter the Champions League. That rule was changed in the 1992-1993 season and there was a group stage added to the competition and the tournament was renamed the UEFA Champions League. In 1997 the competition included runners-up from some European leagues meaning that agroup stage had to take place before the knockout rounds. Some of the lower teams from the league had to play qualifying matches before making it into the Champions League.
